Uplands School Library DonationThe Uplands School Library recently received a donation of $2000.00 for their school library, presented by Rotarian Holly Stengel on behalf of the Penticton Sunrise Rotary Club. Principal Andrea DeVito accepts the cheque with Director of Instruction, Shaune Gowe. The school plans to use the funds to enhance in-class libraries. Basic education and literacy are one of the 7 Areas of Focus of Rotary and supported by the Sunrise Rotary Club.

Congratulations to Tahira Saeed, Rotarian of the Year! RCPS Rotarian of the Year Award Tahira Saeed As President, I am most pleased to announce the selection of Tahira Saeed for our club’s Rotarian of the Year award for RY2020-2021. Her selection was based on the same criteria as was used for the Rotarian of the Month recognition program, namely, the recipient exemplifies the ideals of Rotary; reliable; supportive of club activities; thoughtful of others; first to volunteer; goes well beyond the call of duty. As I alluded to in naming Tahira as the ROM for July, she has fulfilled each criterion in spades. First and foremost, Tahira enthusiastically stepped up to fill the critical position of Club Secretary when a vacancy occurred in late July. In addition to carrying out the demanding secretarial duties, she somehow found the time to provide yeoman service in overseeing the agenda for each of the 48 regular Tues. morning meetings, held via Zoom platform, during the Rotary Year. A major component of the latter task involved timely coordination with the 44 guests who greatly enriched our meetings this past year, comprising 27 guest speakers (15 local; 7 national; and 7 foreign), 8 Student of the Month awardees, 6 past exchange students and 1 Unsung Citizen awardee. The Club Executive recognized from the outset that a major challenge to successfully “weather the COVID storm” would rest on membership engagement, retaining current members and attracting new ones. And to meet this overarching challenge, it would be imperative that our meetings be well-organized with a diverse slate of informative, stimulating and entertaining speakers. Judging from an amazing weekly attendance record consistently running at ~ 75% of our membership (surely one of the highest in the district), this goal was achieved. And for this accomplishment, we have Tahira to thank. In short, Tahira represents the very embodiment of the time-honored Rotarian service-above-self motto, cheerfully and faithfully carrying out her many duties with dogged determination and quiet efficiency. The Rotarian Magazine Annual Photo ContestCongratulations to M A Taher - Rotary Club of Sonargaon Dhaka, Bangladesh for this photo that received Honourable Mention in The Rotarian Magazine's Annual Photo Contest. The photo is taken in a farmer's field in Sonargaon. The RC of Sonargaon Dhaka and Penticton Sunrise Rotary have partnered on a number of projects over the last 10 years to improve water and sanitation, education, and economic development in 4 villages in Bangladesh.  |

Unsung Citizen AwardPresident Mac Paterson presents Harvie Barker with a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow Award, the Penticton Sunrise Rotary's "Unsung Citizen Award". Harvie has written his inspirational Penticton Herald columns "A Good Word in Season" over 18 years and published them in 9 books. Through sales of the books, Harvie has donated $28,000 to the Pathways Addictions Resource Center and the Penticton Herald "Be An Angel" Campaign for the local food bank. Thank you for your service to our community!  |

A Special Tuesday - Vern Nielsen Award & AccelerateAlex Reid spoke to the club about the tech innovation scene in the Okanagan on Tuesday April 25th. As part of Accelerate Okanagan, Alex shared how growth in new and developed companies in the tech sector is benefiting the economics of the entire valley. Accelerate fosters tech innovation through building community and helping businesses with their specific needs. Alex is a special friend of the club having been a club sponsored Rotary Exchange student and the daughter of member Barry Reid. It was a special meeting as the club honored Barry Reid for his outstanding service to Rotary with the Vern Neilsen "Local Hero" award and a Paul Harris. Barry has been a valuable member of the club for many years and his contributions include writing global grants for the Bangladesh project and his numerous club contributions. So nice that his wife and daughter could be on hand for the tribute.   |

Recognizing Local Heros: Alan DawkinsAlan Dawkins was recognized as a community hero last week with the presentation of a Paul Harris award. Alan has been generous with his time for decades, including leadership in Scouting, volunteering at the Souperteria and fostering cultural understanding with the Pentiction sister city of Ikeda Japan. Opportunity to promote Rotary and local businessThe club has been looking for opportunities to promote Rotary in the local community and one way is to take out a page in the Penticton Herald. In order to cover the printing expense business card ads will be sold. This will give local businesses a chance to show they support the good works in the community by Rotary and their business at the same time. Ads will be the very reasonable price of $50 for a business card size. Please ask your friends and businesses where you are a customer, if they would like to participate. We are targeting an October 28th printing. Please let Sandra know if you or a business you know would like to participate by October 19th.

Helping people with disabilities make their own music
Music has been an important part of leading an ordinary life for students at the Music School for Children With Disabilities in Honor of Paul Harris in Lublin, Poland. Founded by Rotary members, the school serves 20 students with various disabilities, including Down syndrome, autism, and visual impairments. The Rotary Club of Lublin-Centrum-Maria Curie-Sklodowska has provided funding with help from Rotary Foundation Matching Grants and the Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society, which houses the school.
After their son Mateusz was born with underdeveloped eyes, Mariusz and Joanna Kania looked for ways to help him be active. When he showed an aptitude for music, they looked for a teacher and were thrilled to find the Paul Harris music school.

Finding Safe Haven For years, Angalia Bianca had slept in abandoned buildings throughout Chicago. She stole. She did drugs. She spent time in and out of jail for forgery, theft, trespassing, and possession of narcotics. But after she landed in prison for the seventh time, something changed -- Bianca knew she wanted a better life. She just didn’t know how to make it happen.After serving her time, Bianca sought help from a local homeless organization, A Safe Haven, and moved to its shelter in the Rogers Park neighborhood. Bianca followed the program closely -- she attended all the required meetings, passed drug tests, and volunteered at every opportunity.

Saving lives in Ghana What is it like taking a large team to Africa? It has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. In mid February, I began leading Rotary members from all over the East Coast of the United States through Ghana. I’ve tried to give the team a warm Ghanaian welcome like I’ve received on my earlier trips. A large trip is a real blessing because each person sees Ghana and our work in a different way.A highlight for the team was greeting the chief of Sagadugu. The team got excited about buying goats and food for children in the villages where I support eight churches. It was good to see the pastors of most of the eight churches, and I had to explain that we were just passing through on our way to Bolgatanga. |
India celebrates three years without polio Throughout India and around the world, Rotary clubs are celebrating a major milestone: India has gone three years without a new case of polio. The last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal on 13 January 2011. To mark this historic triumph, Rotary clubs illuminated landmarks and iconic structures throughout the country with four simple but powerful words, "India is polio free."The three-year achievement sets the stage for polio-free certification of the entire Southeast Asia region by the World Health Organization. The Indian government also plans to convene a polio summit in February to commemorate this victory in the global effort to eradicate polio.

The Penticton Sunrise Rotary Club bestowed its highest distinction, honourary membership, on Ron Mason, who was a member when the club was granted its charter from Rotary International in Jan 1990. Ron ascribed to Rotary’s service-above-self motto long before he joined the club. While serving as Superintendent of Facilities for School District 67 (nee 15), he voluntarily provided expert advice on various community construction projects, including SS Sicamous Restoration and Penticton Yacht Club Renovation in the 1970’s and chaired the Building Committee for the new Penticton Community Centre in 1980-81. He was also a valued Penticton Regional Hospital Board member in the 1980’s.
